Incident Report 998NE30:FORD:B
Attack on the Eastern Post Tower


At approximately midday, an attack took place targeting the Eastern Post Tower of the third wall. I had arrived shortly prior, to oversee the delivery of the Ferdren package (See: Report 998NE30:FORD:A). Before I was able to acquire the package, large sections of the northeastern wall exploded in a large combustion, dismantling much of the wall and scattering the contents of the room. Approximately a dozen orcs then proceeded to charge into the room, seizing packages and other items seemingly at random and fleeing with them. Apart from the violent initiation, this appeared to be typical of a raid. I quickly sent a sentry back to Sartaus with news of the attack and mobilized the guards in the area to defensive positions. We were able to neutralize several of the invaders, however many yet got away. Around this time, a band of individuals entered the tower and aided in our defense of it. These individuals go by the names of Adanessa Ruscrŷn, José Waldarón, and Zed Tirdoff, are known travelers and are elaborated upon in report 998NE29:FORD:B and files SEN:RUSCRŶN,ADANESSA, SEN:WALDARÓN,JOSÉ and SEN:TIRDOFF,ZEDEK,ZED. Once all of the orcs were either dispatched or had fled, a cursory inventory was taken and it was discovered the Ferdren package was missing. The travelers were also unable to locate their item. Assessing the situation, defense of the tower took highest priority, however there were not enough guards to adequately defend the area while also organizing a dispatch party to retrieve the stolen items. I enlisted the help of the travelers to follow with me after the orcs, knowing that they are at least somewhat combat capable and that they would be operating under my leadership so common missteps would be avoided. Having heard about a recent orc occupation of a nearby deserted holdfast, we set out to investigate. We subdued a sentry unit and were able to take the building unawares, though our entrance prompted significant attention. In time we located a secret passage way to a sub-basement level, wherein we discovered some orc officers meeting with what appeared to be a member of the painted skull cult (See reports 997AL47:GEIGER:D, 997KR12:ARIN:B, et. al in the file ORG:PAINTEDSKULL). The painted skull individual unfortunately escaped however we were able to secure the retrieval of the Ferdren package, following which we immediately retreated to the post tower. In my absence, there were no further attacks reported, however I determined it would be best to remain on site until reinforcements could arrive to secure the area. Due to needing to remain at the tower but despite my best judgment, I requested the travelers bring the Ferdren package into the city in my stead, to which they complied. Approximately an hour later reinforcements arrived with stonewrights in tow, and the reconstruction of the wall began. There were no further incidents in the time I remained on site.

Arrival in Sartaus

After purchasing escort services from a Sartaus guard under the command of Ford, and receiving missionary amulets for myself and Zed from the priests, we departed for the city. From there we must quickly find passage to Rom’s Stand to locate Euric, and hopefully learn the truth behind Grandell’s cryptic last words.

The trip itself was quite eventful. One our first day out we were assailed by a cyclops, who was quickly dispatched by the Sartaus guard. On the second day we encountered a duo of human children, Cici and Raz, who were lost and without food. Taking mercy on them, we allowed them on our carriage and paid for their food. On the third and final day, the caravan was attacked by a pack of wild wolves. A few of them managed to reach our wagon, but we were able to either befriend or fend them off. The children were quite scared and clingy during the whole ordeal, but braved through it all the same.

Upon arriving in Sartaus, Ford informed us that in four days time a different patrol will be leaving for the northeast and will pass by Rom’s Stand. Four days is too long, but unfortunately leaving with the patrol is our best change at survival. We bid farewell to the children, and made our way to the local temple to give our thanks to the gods. Outside the temple was a heretic screaming about some godless philosophy, and just as some members of the party were about to accost him, we were stopped by a gnome augur named Deacon. It was at this time we noticed, Zed’s missionary amulet was gone. Quickly we realized there could only be one culprit, the clingy children. Luckily for us, Deacon knew where to find them.

We tracked the children down to a charity kitchen called the Pour Soul, where they almost escaped apprehension. We successfully caught them in a nearby alleyway, at which time they tearfully apologized and begged our forgiveness. Apparently, a local crime lord named Carcone had caught their friend Vigho stealing from him, and decided to keep him prisoner until the debt could be paid. The children offered Zed’s amulet as payment, which Carcone took without releasing their friend. After promising we’d help free their friend as well as retrieve Zed’s amulet, they led us to the entrance of Carcone’s hideout, though under the condition we not let anyone know who led us there.

After skulking around a sewer, encountering all kinds of its nasty inhabitants, we located the cave Carcone’s gang called home. José was able to bluff his way past a half-conscious guard, then knock him out. In the following room José accidentally knocked over a barrel of water, causing a guard to come inspect the situation. Jose then proceeded to sneak up on the guard, knock him out, and steal his clothes for the purposes of disguising himself as one of the thieves. Remarkably, no one caught on to his ruse for quite a while. We were soon able to locate the cavern that served as the thieves’ dungeon, and found the boy named Vigho along with another young girl. Having yet to locate Zed’s amulet, we knew we could not yet escape with the children, so we elected to unlock their cages and leave them there, promising to come back once we were ready to leave.

After further exploration, we found the dining hall where Carcone and the remainder of his henchmen were feasting. José’s ruse quickly fell apart at this point, and the fight was on. We were able to eventually take out the entire gang, though with several of our own down for the count as well. We then found Zed’s amulet just beyond in the sleeping quarters. We went back for the children only to find Vigho had fled, though the girl was still in her cage, too afraid to move. It took some convincing, but we were able to coax her out and bring her with us. Before we left however, we tied up all of the thieves and lowered them into a small chasm in their hideout, so that they authorities would have an easier time rounding them up.

Once we reemerged from the sewer, Zed departed for the temple with the girl, while the rest of us located a nearby inn for some rest after a long day.

Death of Grandell

Alas, it is a dark day for the Temple of Keyn. Our grandmaster, Grandell, has passed on from this world. But let me start at the beginning.

Come the hour of our departure, quite the large group had gathered at the town gates. Three of my brothers, Mikkin, Joffren, and Zed joined us, as well as a half-dozen students of the temple and several townsfolk. Also one women with a pet bird who I didn’t recognize from town, but I’d take all the help I could get.

Unfortunately we weren’t long out of town before our party was set upon by beasts. Two ogres emerges from the woods and quickly dispatched several of our group, including my good friend Joffren. We were able to rally and defeat the brutes, but not without great losses. It was only then I realized I was a fool to let untrained townspeople join this venture, and asked them and the students to return to town. Several left then, but others refused and wished to press on, so press on we did.

We arrived at the valley of Kaghal within a few hours, only to find a landslide blocking our entrance into the valley’s floor. Suspicious this was Grandell’s attempt to keep us out of harm’s way, we tried to find another way into the valley. Mikkin proposed we send a probing party into a nearby cave in an attempt to find a throughway.

We split the group up, with myself, Zed, the remaining townsperson, a young man named José, and the woman with the bird, whose name I learned is Adanessa. Mikkin and the students remained without, while our smaller party delved into a nearby cave. It didn’t take us long to discover the cave’s inhabitants were goblins, and not too keen to see us in their home. We were able to take a few of them by surprise, though one almost escaped us. We eventually stumbled into a mess hall of sorts, and our stealth quickly dissipated. In the ensuing skirmish, we knocked out almost two dozen of the ruffians, and I am somewhat ashamed to admit I got a bit carried away in the fray. In the aftermath, we were able to detain one of the goblins and somehow communicated with him in order to determine the direction of the exit. Granted, it was straight in front of us, so the game of charades was probably not necessary.

As we emerged from the cave into the valley’s floor, we saw ahead of the ruins of the Keep of Kaghal actively falling apart! and I knew we had to make haste if we were going to come to Grandell’s aid in time, so we abandoned the plan to go fetch Mikkin and the students. We ran in to the keep’s courtyard to find Grandell and The Dragonknight exchanging blows, but before we could assist, the villain noticed us and summoned some creatures to hold us off. By the time we dispatched his minions, Grandell had been defeated. The Dragonknight quickly fled, that coward, assuring us on his way that Grandell was no more. Tragically he proved to be correct, but Grandell was able to pass on some enigmatic last words to our party. He told us that we had to find a monk named Euric, and that we needed to protect him.

We regrouped with Mikkin and the students, and prepared for the funeral rites. The three who fought alongside me returned to the Temple ahead to report the events as we witnessed them. The priests there were very surprised to hear about Grandell’s request; as it turns out Euric is a priest himself, though he is almost never at the Temple. Apparently he is fascinated with medicinal study, and frequently travels out into the world in search of new reagents and local wisdoms. But he is also known to be quite the survivalist, more than capable of holding his own out in the wild, so they were unsure as to why he would require protection. Nevertheless, the priests agreed this matter required immediate attention, especially when considering that without Euric present, the priests could not elect a new grandmaster. The priests requested I depart to find Euric as soon as possible, which I of course accepted. Seeing their mettle in battle, as well as due to the fact they were present for Grandell’s death, I asked my cohorts Zed, José, and Adanessa to join me in my quest, which they graciously accepted.

Widespread Destruction in Kenton Township


At approximately midday, a individual self-identifying as The Dragonknight appeared in front of the Temple of Keyn, demanding to duel the temple’s grandmaster, Grandell. Grandell, speaking from an unseen location, refused this challenge. In an attempt to lure Grandell out, the Dragonknight shifted into the form of a dragon, and began immolating much of the town. Grandell at that point spoke again, accepting the challenge, but demanding their fight be relocated to a nearby ruined keep so as to avoid collateral damage. The Dragonknight, still in draconic form, accepted these terms, and flew away. The guard immediately began to mitigate the fire damage to nearby buildings as much as possible, to mild success. Dozens of fatalities and innumerable casualties have been reported. There have also been reports of a mob developing in the town square, led by a monk named Bastian Crutia, intent on going to the aid of Grandell. No member of the guard will be joining any such expedition, as it has been determined that they are needed in town to help handle the damage as well as increase the town’s defenses in this moment of vulnerability.
